A Mpumalanga mother is grappling with the horrific aftermath of a brutal petrol attack on her daughter, allegedly at the hands of her jealous lover.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 20 August, has left 22-year-old Mbali Ngubeni fighting for her life in a Witbank hospital with severe burn wounds.
The alleged perpetrator, Sthembiso Maseko (34), accused Ngubeni of infidelity before dousing her with petrol and setting her alight. The attack took place at their home, leaving Ngubeni's friend to extinguish the flames with blankets.
Sibongile Ngubeni, Mbali's mother, received a chilling phone call from Maseko's friend, informing her of the horrific incident.
"We knew the relationship was toxic, but we didn't know it would end up this way," Sibongile said, her voice heavy with anguish.
The family had tried to intervene in the relationship, but their efforts were met with resistance.
"They've been dating for years now. I was told the perpetrator was abusing my child, and when I intervened, Mbali would deny that she was suffering from abuse. She knew I was going to act harshly, and all of this wouldn't have happened," Sibongile shared.
The family's pleas for Mbali to leave the relationship fell on deaf ears.
"We tried several times to convince her to leave the relationship, but she would go back. As the family, we're sad that this has ended up in such a bad way. We wish that the suspect to be denied bail and gets punished for his actions accordingly," said Siphesihle Ngubeni, Mbali's sister.
The family is now seeking justice for Mbali, demanding that Maseko be held accountable for his actions.
Maseko appeared in the Carolina Magistrates Court on Thursday, 22 August, facing charges of attempted murder. The matter was postponed to Monday, 26 August, for legal representation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences of jealousy. Mpumalanga police spokesman, Colonel Donald Mdluli, confirmed that police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
