Johannesburg – South Africa's entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa, who passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the age of 66. The news was confirmed by his family in a statement. The veteran actor has died from an undisclosed close!

Mlangeni Nawa, a Soweto-born thespian, was a beloved figure on South African screens for decades. He began his career in theatre before transitioning to television, quickly becoming a household name. His earliest work as Laqhasha, a loanshark on the 1980s sitcom Sgudi Snaysi, endeared him to audiences across the country.

However, it was his role as Bra Zeb Matabane on the SABC 3 soap opera Isidingo that cemented his place in South African television history. From the 1990s to 2014, Mlangeni Nawa brought to life the character of Zeb, a complex and relatable figure who resonated with viewers from all walks of life.

The family's statement expressed their deep sorrow at his passing. "It is with deep heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved father, Don Mlangeni-Nawa, [who passed away] on 16 April 2025," the statement read. "He was the heart of our family, a loving father, brother, and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced."

The statement continued, "His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told and the love he gave so freely." The family has requested privacy as they grieve their loss and have promised to share details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements in due course.

Mlangeni Nawa's contribution to South African television extends far beyond Isidingo. He also featured in popular shows such as Uzalo, Abomama, The River, The Throne, Savage Beauty, The Estate, Legacy, Hlala Kwabafileyo, Ubambo Lwami, and more recently, Pound 4 Pound. His portrayal of Zakhe Mhlongo in Hlala Kwabafileyo is particularly remembered as one of the most legendary and unforgettable performances in South African television history. Viewers still reference the show today, fondly recalling Mlangeni's dedication to the character, from the scar on his face to his grey hair.

His talent and dedication were recognised throughout his career. In 2006, he received a South African Film and Television Award for Best Actor. He was also honoured with Lifetime Achievement awards at the Royalty Soapie Awards and the Simon 'Mabhunu' Sabela Awards.

Tshepo Maseko, who played Zeb's son Parsons on Isidingo, shared his memories of the late actor. "But I mean, we spoke about everything, about how to look after money, how to invest, how to look after his craft, how we should never take drugs, how we should take his craft very seriously, how we should try and humanise every single character." Maseko's words highlight Mlangeni Nawa's commitment not only to his craft but also to mentoring and guiding younger actors.

As Parsons (Tshepo Maseko) and Lettie's (Lesego Motsepe) father, he mirrored the challenges and triumphs of an African man trying to raise children who were as grounded as they were hardworking. As a spouse to Agnes – played by Keketso Semoko – he delivered a memorable portrayal of an imperfect husband navigating the trials and tribulations of matrimony determined to keep his home intact despite his flaws.

The passing of Don Mlangeni Nawa marks a significant loss for the South African entertainment industry. His talent, dedication, and mentorship will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a rich legacy of memorable performances and a lasting impact on the lives of those he worked with and the audiences he entertained.
