Pop sensation Makhadzi, known for her energetic performances and chart-topping hits, has sparked a feud with the organisers of the annual Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival, throwing the event into a whirlwind of controversy.
The source of the drama? A hefty price tag and a perceived snub by the Ganama hitmaker. According to sources close to the festival, Makhadzi initially rejected a R130 000 performance fee, deeming it "a pittance" for her services. She countered with a staggering R200 000 demand, despite the festival being held a stone's throw from her hometown, the Sunday World has reported.
Despite the organisers increasing their offer to R180 000, Makhadzi remained steadfast, reportedly showing them "the middle finger" and refusing to budge. "They told her that they couldn't afford to pay her R200 000 and tried to negotiate, but she just wouldn't budge," a member of the Phalaphala FM planning committee revealed.
Adding insult to injury, Makhadzi also demanded a rider, including transport and accommodation, despite being a local. "Had the organisers agreed, they would have spent over R250 000 on her alone," the source added.
The singer's actions have left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Phalaphala FM team, who have long been supporters of her music. "Phalaphala FM staff is very disappointed with her. Remember, Phalaphala FM is one of the sponsors of the show and played a big role in promoting her music on the station," said a source.
The tension reached a boiling point when Makhadzi, after rejecting the festival offer, took to Facebook to announce her availability for bookings on the date of the Royal Heritage Festival. This was followed by the announcement of three separate festivals, organised by Makhadzi, to be held in Vuwani, Madombidzha, and Nzhelele on the same day as the Royal Heritage Festival.
"You could see that she is trying to sabotage the festival. She has even tried to book Colbert Mukwevho to be part of her line-up, but he refused because he did not want to be part of her petty politics," the source revealed. "Apart from that, Mukwevho felt that the Royal Heritage festival organisers have been loyal to him as they have been booking him for many years to perform at the event since its inception."
The source went on to express their disappointment with Makhadzi, stating that Phalaphala FM had supported her career even before she achieved fame. "They [were going to pay] her peanuts to perform at the show. Not even Maphorisa or Kabza, who are the biggest artists [currently] in South Africa, charge the money that Makhadzi is demanding. This is a lot of money, especially because she is performing in her home district," the source said.
The situation has left many wondering about Makhadzi's motives. Is this a calculated move to sabotage the Royal Heritage Festival, or a case of a rising star demanding her due?
Attempts to reach Shandukani Nesengani, the festival organiser, for comment were unsuccessful. Makhadzi also did not respond to questions sent to her or answer her phone when called.
