Mzansi entertainment industry is in mourning following the tragic death of beloved actor and prophet Papi Lethoba, whose talent graced our screens and stages for years. The news of his passing, in a car accident on Sunday morning, 30 June, has left a gaping hole in the hearts of his family, friends, and countless fans.
Papi's brother, Isack Lethoba, spoke of the immense loss the family is experiencing. "Our family pillar is no more, and we are saddened by his unexplainable death that will stay in our minds all the time," he told the Daily Sun, his voice heavy with grief. "Our father has asked us to come to terms with the death of his son, but it's a wound that will take time to heal."
Isack painted a poignant picture of their last moments together. "Papi visited us on Saturday, and we spent the day together, laughing and sharing stories. We had no idea it would be our last time with him," he said, his voice cracking with emotion.
Papi, who resided in Sebokeng, had visited his father in Koppies, Free State, on Saturday morning. He left after 11 pm, returning to Sebokeng. "We wondered why he didn't report his arrival home," Isack said, his voice laced with concern. "Then, in the early hours of Sunday morning, we received a call from the police telling us to go to Sasolburg. When we arrived, we found Papi's car badly damaged on the side of the road. The police told us he lost control."
The details of the accident, as recounted by Isack, are both tragic and perplexing. "My brother was a responsible driver who has never driven a car very fast. His speed was always below 100 km/h," he said, his voice filled with disbelief. "To find his car so badly damaged and to know he was killed while driving on a smooth road with no potholes, left us with many questions that no one will answer."
Another family member told Celeb Gossip News that they are suspecting foul play because their relative was a very responsible driver.
Just four months ago, Papi Lethoba had welcomed his gift of being a prophet and healer.
Despite realizing his gift at an early age, Lethoba didn’t formally pursue his spiritual gift but continued with his acting gigs.
in February this year, Lethoba said he was privileged to have crossed paths with popular producer and actor, Nyembezi Kunene, who brought him to where he is. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster in his sacred temple, Lethoba detailed both his journeys to date.
“Acting has always been part of me and since primary, I was always a stage and attention person. I started professionally acting for theatre plays and on-screen acting after my matric when I got to the Vaal and landed in the hands of the Nyembezi Kunene through his agency, Dramatic Zone. I played several cameo roles for popular TV shows, and some leads,” he said.
At the time, the Free State-born actor and prophet at Saint Moses Faith Healing Apostolic Church said he was popularly known for his spiritual link in his hometown than he is as an actor.
“Growing up, I always loved attention. When there were prayer sessions at our school, funerals in our township, or church-related stuff, I was your go-to guy, little did I know this was a gift. The day I took into consideration that I had a gift, was when I had a spiritual epiphany at church. Since that day I knew one day I would have to undertake initiation as a prophet,” he said, without knowing that he was just serving his last days of his life.
Papi's sudden passing has left a void in the South African entertainment scene. He was a familiar face on television, appearing in numerous popular shows, including Scandal!, Generations: The Legacy, City Ses'la, Majakathata, Stokvel, Emzini Wezinsizwa, and many others. His talent and charisma shone through in every role he played, captivating audiences and leaving an enduring mark on the industry.
Sergeant Peter, Free State police spokesman, confirmed the accident. "On Sunday morning at R57 road near the R59 off-ramp, a vehicle lost control, and a 47-year-old male deceased was found next to the vehicle. Sasolburg police are investigating a culpable homicide case," he said.
