Tank The Rockstar, son of renowned DJ Tira, is making waves in the South African music scene, but he admits life in the shadow of his famous father comes with its own set of challenges. He's currently featured on Showmax's reality series, "Born Into Fame," which gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of children navigating the world of celebrity parents.
Tank, however, is quick to point out the perks of being DJ Tira's son. "My dad has worked so hard and that affords me a certain lifestyle and access to things," he says. "The best thing about being DJ Tira’s son is that I can get whatever I want, wherever I go."
While he enjoys the privileges, Tank acknowledges the downsides of having a famous father. "The worst thing about having a famous dad is that he is busy all the time. So I do not get to spend a lot of time with him – there is always a project that he is working on," he explains. "Another thing that is not so great is that people just expect you to be like your dad. They do not give you a chance to be yourself."
The pressure to live up to his father's legacy is something Tank is acutely aware of. "There are a lot of pressures when it comes to fame. This is because, just like my father, I am also a musician," he says. "Most people expect me to be on point all the time, not realising that I am just figuring myself and my sound out. I am still trying to build my career. And it is a work in progress. People expect perfection, but that is not how life is."
Tank insists that he is not living in DJ Tira's shadow. "I am a larger-than-life character with a lot of personality," he says. "I do not believe I live in DJ Tira’s shadow."
Despite the challenges, Tank sees the positive side of being born into fame. "It can be a cheat code to get the things you want," he says. "Like everything else, it has its challenges, but at this point in my life, I am used to it."
Tank's journey on "Born Into Fame" has helped him forge new connections. "Watching the show has made it easier to befriend certain people on the show. This is because of the things that were done and said," he says.
Tank is carving his own path in the music industry, determined to make his mark on the scene. He's aware of the expectations that come with being DJ Tira's son, but he's not letting them define him. He's embracing the challenges, learning from his experiences, and forging his own unique identity as a musician.
