The South African entertainment industry is sending well wishes to veteran actor Darlington Michaels, best known for his iconic role as Papa G in the beloved soapie, Isidingo.

Michaels has reportedly been admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, after experiencing severe breathing difficulties.

A source at the hospital told Zimoja that Michaels arrived by ambulance and required immediate oxygen support from medical staff.

"Everyone in the emergency reception recognised him. He has really aged. It was sad to watch," the source said.

Michaels previously suffered a stroke in 2020, which forced him to take a break from acting and focus on his recovery.

"I suffered a stroke and this forced me to take a break from work and focus on my health. My screen time was cut short because of the stroke," he shared during an interview on Metro FM's The Morning Flava breakfast show.

Adding to the concern, a fellow actor who worked with Michaels in theatre revealed that the veteran actor had reached out to him a few weeks ago, seeking assistance due to illness. The source also mentioned that Michaels had expressed frustration over a lack of acting opportunities, feeling rejected by the industry and struggling to make a living.

"It's sad how tributes come only when it's too late. The industry needs to do more for its veteran stars," a friend of Michaels lamented.

Darlington Michaels' current situation has sparked a much-needed conversation about the treatment of older actors in South Africa. Many believe that instead of only offering tributes after their passing, the industry should provide more support and recognition to these talented individuals while they are still alive.

Michaels, a true veteran of the South African entertainment scene, has graced our screens for decades, bringing joy and entertainment to countless viewers. His career spans numerous popular television shows, including Isidingo, Chandies, How to Ruin Christmas: The Funeral, The Road, Gazlam, and Vula Vala.
