Ukhozi FM presenter Siya Mhlongo found himself in the dock on Friday, 6 September, facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The arrest, confirmed by KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda, stems from an alleged incident involving a 29-year-old man, who claims to be Mhlongo's boyfriend, on Saturday, 31 August.
The alleged victim told Daily Sun that he and Mhlongo had a romantic relationship from 2020 to 2021, broke up, and rekindled their romance earlier this year. However, their reunion was short-lived, with the alleged assault occurring after a night out with friends.
"After one of our friends blew kisses at me, I didn’t realise Siya was angry about it," the alleged victim recounted.
"We went to his car, where a heated argument about the blowing of kisses ensued. He was angry, accusing me of cheating on him with one of our friends. He said friends would not say goodbye by blowing kisses if we weren't dating each other.”
"I refused, and he started to attack me with an alcohol bottle on my face. Then, he punched me until a VW Polo passing by stopped, and the occupants intervened. After that, I stepped out of the car and took a video as evidence when he was asking to take me to the hospital. I refused as I felt unsafe,” he said.
The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows the alleged victim bleeding from the face, standing outside the car, while Mhlongo is seen sitting inside, urging him to get in.
The alleged victim, who sustained facial injuries, sought medical attention at a nearby hospital and filed an assault case at the Durban Central SAPS on Sunday, 1 September.
"Police in Durban Central have arrested a 40-year-old man for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following an incident in which a 29-year-old man was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by a suspect known to him on 31 August 2024," Colonel Netshiunda stated.
"The victim sustained injuries to the face and was taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspect is expected to appear today (Friday, 6 September) in the Durban Magistrates Court.”
Mhlongo is a well-known and respected figure in the South African radio industry and has not yet publicly commented on the allegations. His legal team is expected to represent him in court as the case unfolds.
