The South African entertainment industry is mourning the loss of a beloved actor, Darlington Michaels, who passed away on Friday, 13 September, at the age of 54.

Known to many as Georgie "Papa G" Zamdela from the popular SABC3 soapie Isidingo, Michaels's charismatic presence and captivating performances touched the hearts of countless viewers for over two decades.

Michaels's journey in the entertainment industry began on stage under the guidance of the legendary Gibson Kente in the 1990s. He quickly established himself as a talented performer, showcasing his versatility and passion for the craft.

In 1984, he wrote and starred in the play Survival, a powerful commentary on the apartheid prison system and its brutal treatment of black prisoners.

His breakthrough role came in 1997 when he joined the cast of Isidingo. His portrayal of the endearing and outspoken Papa G, who spoke tsotsi taal, resonated deeply with audiences, cementing his place as a household name. His character brought a unique blend of humour, wisdom, and street smarts to the show, captivating viewers and earning him widespread recognition.

However, in 2016, Michaels's career was tragically interrupted when he suffered a stroke. This forced him to take a break from acting, focusing on his health and recovery. During this difficult period, he shared his struggles with the public, acknowledging the impact of the stroke on his screen time.

"I suffered a stroke and this forced me to take a break from work and focus on my health. My screen time was cut short because of the stroke," he said during an interview on Metro FM's The Morning Flava breakfast show.

Despite the setback, Michaels's determination and love for acting shone through. He returned to the small screen in 2020, playing the role of Gap in Mzansi Magic's new drama series, Vula Vala. His comeback was met with joy and support from fans who had missed his presence on television.

Unfortunately, Michaels's health took a turn for the worse in recent weeks. He was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, after experiencing severe breathing difficulties.

A source at the hospital revealed that Michaels arrived by ambulance and required immediate oxygen support.

"Everyone in the emergency reception recognised him. He has really aged. It was sad to watch," the source said.

The news of his passing has seen tributes pouring in from fellow actors, directors, and fans. The SABC, in a statement on their social media pages, expressed their profound sadness at the loss of the "legendary" Darlington Michaels.

"The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered," they said.

The SABC also extended their heartfelt condolences to Michaels's family, friends, and fans.

A fellow actor who worked with Michaels in theatre revealed that the veteran actor had reached out to him a few weeks ago, seeking assistance due to illness. The source also mentioned that Michaels had expressed frustration over a lack of acting opportunities, feeling rejected by the industry and struggling to make a living.

"It's sad how tributes come only when it's too late," a friend of Michaels lamented. "The industry needs to do more for its veteran stars."
