Two years have passed since the tragic death of Oupa Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody, and his bodyguard in a hail of bullets in Woodmead, north of Johannesburg.
Despite the high profile nature of the case, the investigation has stalled, leaving the family and the public with unanswered questions.
The news that the case has been classified as "cold" has come as a blow to DJ Sumbody's family. Meaghan Sebela, a family representative, told ZiMoja that they were completely unaware of the case's status.
"We don't know anything; we don't even know how far things are with the case, and this is the first we hear about the case being cold. We just want to know who killed him. It's surprising that a person of his stature can be killed, and the killers are not brought to book; this is disappointing," she said.
A police source explained that the case has been declared "null", meaning it has been officially classified as cold. This means that investigations have been halted until new evidence emerges.
"Every case that is investigated is given a time period and when the time expires, it means the case will be treated as cold; this is done so that the focus can be given to other cases that are ongoing. However, although not prevalent, should there be new evidence, then the case is reopened," the source said.
The lack of progress in the investigation has left many questioning the police's commitment to finding justice for DJ Sumbody and his bodyguard. The family's frustration is understandable, given the lack of communication from the authorities. They are left grappling with the pain of loss and the uncertainty of whether they will ever know who took their loved one's lives.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, confirmed the case's status, stating that it is now considered cold until new leads are found. However, the family remains in the dark about the investigation's specifics, leaving them with a sense of helplessness and despair.
