Multiple charges laid against actor Sello Maake Kancube: He didn't reveal his health status to me, he exposed me to the infectious disease

Celebrated South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube narrowly avoided arrest last Friday following a dramatic confrontation with his wife, who had filed multiple charges against him, including allegations of exposing her to a deadly sexually transmitted disease.

The case, initially reported at the Roodepoort Police Station last Saturday, was subsequently transferred to Orlando Police Station, where the summons was issued.

The actor's wife, who was accompanied by her lawyer, also appeared at the police station to provide additional information. However, when confronted with the prospect of arrest, Maake kaNcube retaliated by filing counter-charges of assault against his wife. This led to a stalemate, with both parties withdrawing their charges to avoid spending the weekend in custody.

The initial charges laid by Maake kaNcube’s wife paint a disturbing picture of alleged abuse and health concealment. In a police statement obtained by the news crew, she accuses the actor of failing to be fully transparent about his health status, alleging exposure to a transmittable disease. She further describes him as a “violent man” with “anger issues,” requesting a thorough police investigation.

The statement details several alleged incidents of assault and choking. One incident occurred at their marital home in Dube, Soweto, on 29 March 2024, following an argument.

“While we were at his house, we had an argument, and he got angry and started slapping me. After that, he strangled my neck (sic). I fell down, and he dragged me on the floor,” the statement reads.

Further allegations involve an incident in the Eastern Cape in June, after a theatre performance.

“At about 23:00 while we were at the hotel in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, Sello was moody. I explained to him that he must not take out his anger on me. Sello was angry because the lady he was acting with pushed him. I explained to him that I don’t want to suffer because another woman pushed him,” she stated.

She alleges that Maake kaNcube subsequently beat and choked her, leaving her with a facial scar. “When I woke up, he grabbed me [by] my neck and threw me on the floor. I hit a hard carpet with my face. The carpet burnt my face, and the incident left me with a lifetime scar,” she alleged. She returned to Johannesburg alone the following day with a facial injury.

Another alleged assault occurred last month at their Dube home, stemming from an argument about his daughter. The wife claims that Maake kaNcube became aggressive, demanding her car keys.

“I started packing my belongings, and he demanded car keys from me, and I refused to give them to him,” she stated. She alleges he then aggressively searched her bra for the keys, tearing her bra in the process, before choking and dragging her on the ground. She further states that his niece, Neo Kotoane, intervened, pleading with him to stop the assault, but he remained unmoved.

A final alleged incident took place on 29 October, when Maake kaNcube visited her home in Roodepoort. She alleges he became angry because she hadn't woken him up, grabbing and pushing her.

“I explained to him that I reminded him to set the alarm a day before [going to sleep]. He did not listen to me and grabbed me and pushed me back and forth. I told him to leave, and he did not leave. I felt threatened and took a plate with food and threw it against the wall, and the food spilt on his shirt,” she stated.

The wife’s decision to file these charges follows Maake kaNcube’s obtaining a protection order against her at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where he alleged that she was physically and emotionally abusing him. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) South Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, confirmed the existence of the case but stated that it had not yet been placed on the court roll.

When contacted for comment, Maake kaNcube’s wife stated that she withdrew the charges due to perceived police bias and special treatment afforded to the actor. Maake kaNcube himself vehemently denies all allegations.

“In my opinion she seeks to damage my name and good standing. She has previously threatened to do so, and has since made good on the threats she made. Therefore I had no choice but to seek a protection order, but now she seeks to change the narrative to portray me as the aggressor,” he said.
