Johannesburg – The family of celebrated Kwaito musician and businessman, Doc Shebeleza, has issued an urgent plea for prayers as the music icon battles for his life in hospital. Victor Bogopane, better known by his stage name Doc Shebeleza, is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) awaiting crucial surgery scheduled for Monday, 2 December.
A family spokesperson, Shakes Mavundla, confirmed the news in a statement, appealing to the public for support. “Mzansi, please put our kwaito legend, businessman, Amaha chairperson in your good, blessed prayers, who continues to assist the poorest of the poorest in our beautiful country,” Mavundla urged, highlighting the musician's significant contributions beyond his musical career.
The news of Doc Shebeleza's critical condition comes as a shock to many, particularly given his recent apparent good health. Mavundla revealed that the musician was actively preparing for an upcoming event just before his health took a turn for the worse. “I’m shocked, as he was looking happy and healthy and preparing for the Aboguluvala event in Soweto, but we are hopeful he will make it after the operation,” he stated, expressing both surprise and cautious optimism regarding the upcoming surgery.
This marks the second serious health scare for the “Ebumnandini” hitmaker this year. In June, Doc Shebeleza was hospitalised for an undisclosed illness, causing concern amongst his fans and family. This latest health crisis, however, appears far more serious, given his current admission to the ICU and the need for immediate surgery. The gravity of the situation has understandably heightened the anxiety surrounding his condition.
Doc Shebeleza's career has spanned several decades, beginning with his breakthrough debut album, S'Kumfete, in 1996. Since then, he has cemented his status as a leading figure in the Kwaito genre, leaving an indelible mark on South African music. His music continues to be enjoyed by generations of fans, transcending age and cultural boundaries.
Beyond his musical achievements, Doc Shebeleza is also recognised for his significant charitable work. As chairperson of Amaha, he has dedicated himself to supporting fellow musicians facing hardship, demonstrating a commitment to his community that extends beyond his artistic pursuits. His philanthropic efforts have touched countless lives, earning him respect and admiration from fans and colleagues alike.
The news of his critical illness has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the South African music scene. Doc Shebeleza's contributions to Kwaito and his broader humanitarian work have made him a beloved figure, and his ongoing struggle has prompted an outpouring of concern and well-wishes from across the country.
