East London – A wave of grief has swept through the Eastern Cape following the death of popular Umhlobo Wenene FM broadcaster and pastor, Nomonde Patience Vakalisa, at the age of 47.
The news was confirmed this morning during a live broadcast of the station’s popular Khanya Gqiyazana show by SABC Eastern Cape business manager, Loyiso Bala. Bala announced the sad news, stating that further details regarding the circumstances of her passing would be released in due course.
This loss marks another blow to the Umhlobo Wenene FM family, which has experienced several bereavements in recent years. Pastor Vakalisa, affectionately known as "Smondz," was a cherished member of the station, having joined in July 2008 and quickly becoming an integral part of its programming for the past sixteen years.
Her career at the station began with hosting the popular Top 30 chart show, Izikhokho Zomzantsi. She later co-hosted the Break-a-Slice-fast breakfast show alongside "Slyso" in 2009. Her passion for gospel music and ministry led her to host Iqonga Lomculo Wevangeli in 2012, before co-hosting the immensely popular Imvuselelo show.
On Imvuselelo, she shared the presenting duties with the late Reverend Joe Lofafa, then Reverend Faleni, until June 2022, and subsequently with Reverend Keketso Bloem from 2022 until March 2023. In 2023, she took on the role of main anchor for Ngenani Emasangweni Ngendumiso. Her contributions to the station spanned a wide range of programming, showcasing her versatility and dedication to broadcasting.
Pastor Vakalisa’s illness had been a matter of public knowledge. In May, she shared with her listeners that she had fallen ill and become paralysed. Her condition unfortunately worsened, prompting Umhlobo Wenene FM to organise a tribute and fundraising concert in her honour. This event served as a powerful testament to the love and respect she commanded from her colleagues, listeners, and the wider community.
Bala’s statement highlighted the profound impact Pastor Vakalisa had on the lives of many: "This is a testament to the love and respect she garnered throughout her career. Pastor Vakalisa was more than a broadcaster; she was a voice of hope, a spiritual guide, and a beloved member of our community."
Beyond her professional achievements, she leaves behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her listeners.
The station expressed its heartfelt condolences to Pastor Vakalisa’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
"Umhlobo Wenene FM extends its deepest condolences to Pastor Vakalisa's family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. During this difficult time, we come together to honour her remarkable legacy and the immeasurable impact she had on all of us," the statement concluded.
Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but her contributions to broadcasting and her spiritual guidance will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew her. She is survived by her son.
