The spotlight is once again on Sonia Mbele, the former Generations actress, but this time the focus is not on her career. Her 23-year-old son, Donell Mbele, is facing serious allegations. He appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday on two counts of rape.

The charges stem from a complaint lodged at the Sandton Police Station by Donell's 17-year-old ex-girlfriend. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane outlined the allegations:

“[The ex-girlfriend] alleges that Mbele raped her on 14 and 15 December 2024 at his place of residence in Morningside. She explained that the two of them were out on a date at Clearwater Mall on the 14th. After consuming some beverages and upon realising that the restaurant they were seated at was about to close, they both agreed to move to a different venue. She said that the accused allegedly indicated that he wanted them to pass by his place of residence as he needed to charge his phone. On arrival, that’s when the incidents allegedly occurred.”

The court appearance was brief. Donell was granted bail of R1000 and the case was adjourned until 10 February 2025, to allow for further police investigation. This is not the first time Donell has been embroiled in controversy. In 2022, he made headlines after his then-girlfriend, Reokeditswe Makete, accused him of physical assault following a dispute over his infidelity.

At the time, Mbele issued a statement acknowledging the troubled nature of their relationship, describing it as toxic and mutually abusive. She also revealed that her son had sought help through rehabilitation.

However, Makete later took to Instagram to vehemently deny the assault allegations, stating, “I’m pissed as f***k cause if I really had to speak the truth about the situation, y'all would be shook!”

The current rape allegations have understandably cast a long shadow over the family. When contacted by Drum, Mbele chose to remain tight-lipped, preferring to await the outcome of the legal process before commenting publicly. She stated: "There’s a whole lot that is not known and I’d rather not comment until the truth comes out in this case."

The gravity of the charges against Donell cannot be understated. The allegations are serious and carry significant consequences. The upcoming court date in February will be a critical juncture in the case, determining the direction of the legal proceedings and the potential ramifications for Donell Mbele.
