From Celebrity Sangoma to Jail Cell: Fellow sangoma issues strong warning to pregnant Gogo Maweni's clients

Johannesburg – Controversial traditional healer and media personality Gogo Maweni, real name Makgotso Mofokeng, faces a mounting legal battle and troubling predictions from a fellow sangoma, as her past convictions for theft and fraud resurface.

Maweni is scheduled to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto next month, on March 16, to face a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) stemming from an incident in 2019.

The case took a new turn yesterday, February 11, when Maweni appeared in court, only to have her case postponed for further investigation. She was initially granted R5,000 bail after spending a week behind bars last month.

Magistrate Rozelle Khiye found that the 39-year-old Maweni was dishonest when she lied about her previous fraud and reckless driving charges, where she was found guilty. The court heard that the investigation has already been completed by the investigating officer from the Gauteng Province Cold Case Investigation Unit.

Amidst these legal challenges, another traditional healer, Solly Mathebula, also known as Gogo Mahlasela, has issued a stark warning to Gogo Maweni's customers. Gogo Mahlasela believes there is a "dark cloud" hanging over Maweni due to her time in prison and has expressed concerns about her current ability to offer spiritual guidance. He cautioned that consulting with her now could bring misfortune.

"Jail is a dark space. People get sentenced there. She must go to a river and perform a cleansing. She needs an inyanga to cleanse her," said Gogo Mahlasela.

He suggested that if he were in Maweni's position, he would cease offering services until the legal proceedings conclude, allowing her ancestors to fight for her during this turbulent time. Gogo Mahlasela further suggested that Maweni's arrest may indicate that her ancestors have allegedly turned their backs on her.

"If she doesn’t get cleansed, the worst could happen," he warned.

According to Gogo Mahlasela's bone readings, this is just the beginning of Maweni's problems. "More is coming. More arrests, especially with people close to her, and more cases linking her to many things," he predicted.

Gogo Mahlasela emphasised the need to question where Maweni's ancestors are at this moment of crisis. "If Maweni was powerful, her amadlozi wouldn't have let her end up in jail. They would have protected her. She was warned by many people and didn't listen. Her ancestors have now turned their backs on her," he said.

Adding to the complexities surrounding Maweni, it has been revealed that she is currently expecting twins. Maweni, a mother of four, confirmed to the court during her bail application that she is expecting twins.

Furthermore, the Gauteng Cold Case Investigation Unit has also arrested Lindani Mgube, 34, a brother-in-law of Maweni, in connection with a double murder case. Mgube is accused of murdering gobela Faith Mafilika and initiate Bandile Kubheka.

He was remanded in custody after his two court appearances at the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court and is scheduled to appear at the same court today, February 12, for a formal bail application. Maweni's bail has been extended.
