Johannesburg – Controversial traditional healer and media personality Gogo Maweni, real name Makgotso Mofokeng, faces a mounting legal battle and troubling predictions from a fellow sangoma, as her past convictions for theft and fraud resurface.
Maweni is scheduled to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto next month, on March 16, to face a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) stemming from an incident in 2019.
Magistrate Rozelle Khiye found that the 39-year-old Maweni was dishonest when she lied about her previous fraud and reckless driving charges, where she was found guilty. The court heard that the investigation has already been completed by the investigating officer from the Gauteng Province Cold Case Investigation Unit.
Amidst these legal challenges, another traditional healer, Solly Mathebula, also known as Gogo Mahlasela, has issued a stark warning to Gogo Maweni's customers. Gogo Mahlasela believes there is a "dark cloud" hanging over Maweni due to her time in prison and has expressed concerns about her current ability to offer spiritual guidance. He cautioned that consulting with her now could bring misfortune.
"Jail is a dark space. People get sentenced there. She must go to a river and perform a cleansing. She needs an inyanga to cleanse her," said Gogo Mahlasela.
"If she doesn’t get cleansed, the worst could happen," he warned.
According to Gogo Mahlasela's bone readings, this is just the beginning of Maweni's problems. "More is coming. More arrests, especially with people close to her, and more cases linking her to many things," he predicted.
Gogo Mahlasela emphasised the need to question where Maweni's ancestors are at this moment of crisis. "If Maweni was powerful, her amadlozi wouldn't have let her end up in jail. They would have protected her. She was warned by many people and didn't listen. Her ancestors have now turned their backs on her," he said.
Adding to the complexities surrounding Maweni, it has been revealed that she is currently expecting twins. Maweni, a mother of four, confirmed to the court during her bail application that she is expecting twins.
He was remanded in custody after his two court appearances at the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court and is scheduled to appear at the same court today, February 12, for a formal bail application. Maweni's bail has been extended.
