JOHANNESBURG – Actress and television host Nomsa Buthelezi-Shezi, known to many as the "Gomora diva," has revealed the harsh realities of working in the South African entertainment industry, including her difficult experience on Mzansi Magic’s 'Our Perfect Wedding' and the circumstances surrounding her departure from the show.
Speaking candidly on the "Engineer Your Life" podcast, Buthelezi-Shezi described the industry as an "unsafe space" where individuals are often subjected to abuse, body-shaming, and hurtful comments. "Many people hurt me in this industry, and they never said sorry, and it is okay. I always tell myself that even if you do not apologise, I feel I am not worthy of your apology because you feel superior to me," she said.
She added that some individuals, particularly those with industry power and producer influence, are "so abusive" and "tread on other people’s toes."
Reflecting on her time on 'Our Perfect Wedding,' Buthelezi-Shezi expressed regret for not standing up for herself against certain crew members who she claims "planned, carried out, and reported falsehoods." She believes that some of these individuals were "homophobic without showing me that they are," creating a hostile work environment.
"I feel like I lost 'Our Perfect Wedding' because some people felt that I had been there for too long," Buthelezi-Shezi revealed. She explained that she eventually realised she "was no longer okay" and "was sad," leading her to the difficult decision to quit the show.
"I had to quit presenting the show because I was no longer okay," she stated. She also expressed regret for not seeking help from the executive producer or addressing the issues directly with those involved.
Buthelezi-Shezi married Zandile Shezi, in 2019. The couple celebrated their traditional wedding in Alexandra with close friends and family.
