The South African music scene is buzzing with a new drama, this time involving gqom queen Babes Wodumo and DJ Kotini. The pair, who collaborated on a track aimed at reviving Babes' career, are now locked in a dispute over the song's release.
The controversy began when DJ Kotini shared a video on social media, showcasing a recording session with Babes, and announced that he was working on a song to help her regain her musical momentum. "She is coming back," he wrote, tagging Babes in the post.
However, whispers of a brewing feud soon emerged, with sources close to the situation revealing that Babes is refusing to let go of the song for official release.
According to these sources, DJ Kotini approached Babes to feature on the track, alongside another artist, Madanon, titled "Nzo Nzo Nzo". The source claimed that the problem arose when Babes and her recording company became "greedy" after hearing the song's potential for summer hit status.
"They changed their mind during the listening session and decided that they wanted to keep the song," the informant revealed.
The source added that Kotini, who arranged and paid for the studio session, had requested Babes' participation as a feature artist. However, this unexpected change of heart by Babes has thrown a wrench into Kotini's plans, as he was looking to release his album during the festive season.
"DJ Kotini is frustrated because he wants to plan his holiday now but Babes is being difficult," the source shared. Another source revealed that Kotini even suggested releasing the song as a group effort, but Babes remained unyielding.
DJ Kotini himself confirmed the dispute, stating that the song is his and that Babes was merely a featured artist.
"That is my song and she knows that," he asserted. He also informed ZiMoja that he would be dropping his single towards the end of September. "The song you referring to will only come out on the full album," he clarified.
Babes Wodumo, when approached for comment, declined to elaborate on the situation. "I have nothing to say for now," she stated.
