The South African music scene is mourning the loss of two talented artists, Malome Vector and Lizwi Wokuqala, who tragically died in a car accident earlier this year. But amidst the grief, a glimmer of hope emerges from the survivor of the crash, rising star Puleng Rebecca Phoofolo.

Phoofolo, an Afro-soul singer, has found solace in music, dedicating her latest single, "MAMA", to her late mother and as a tribute to the power of family and love.

Speaking to Sunday World, Phoofolo revealed that she is still grappling with the emotional impact of the accident.

"I am not okay emotionally since the deaths of the two singers. I have experienced grief from losing loved ones and want to use my pain to heal others through my new single," she shared.

"MAMA" is a poignant expression of gratitude and appreciation for her mother's unwavering support.

"Through the song, I wanted to show appreciation to my late mom and to show gratitude as I am reaping the fruits of her prayers," Phoofolo explained.

But the song also serves as a powerful reminder to cherish those still living, particularly mothers.

"The song is to also bring awareness to those who still have their parents and loved ones, particularly their mothers, to love them like there’s no tomorrow. Those with broken relationships with their mothers should at least work on their bond. It is not easy to do this life thing without a mother," she said.

Phoofolo's journey to becoming a musician began in her childhood, singing at Sunday School. She later joined the church's worship team, honing her skills and performing for years.

In 2022, gospel artist Ntate Teboho Moloi gave her a significant opportunity, inviting her to perform alongside him at his "Ya Re Tshepisitseng" album launch in Bloemfontein. This performance marked a turning point in her career.

Later that year, Phoofolo met Sliq Magagula, and they discussed the possibilities for her career. They agreed to sign her to Sliq Records, and she began collaborating and performing with other artists on the label.

In March 2023, Phoofolo released her debut single, "Morero", under Sliq Records. She then worked on her second single, "Rato Laka", which featured the late Malome Vector.
