Durban – Popular UZALO actor and musician Cebo Mthembu is on the road to recovery following ankle surgery in April, and he’s already setting his sights on a remarkable comeback: running the iconic Comrades Marathon in 2025.

The 40-year-old, who plays the much-loved Detective Khalabemgeza Nyawo in the hit television series, was forced to miss this year’s June race due to the operation. However, speaking exclusively to Daily Sun, Mthembu revealed his ambitious plans to return to the gruelling 85km race next year.

Hailing from Manguzi in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mthembu expressed his disappointment at missing the 2024 Comrades Marathon, a race he’s been participating in since 2018.

“I was heartbroken when I missed the Comrades Marathon this year because of the operation. I miss the way people cheer for me when I run. I think from start to finish, people love to see me running, and that motivates me. My club, Manguzi Athletic Club, will be happy to have me back,” he said.

The enthusiastic runner clearly cherishes the support he receives along the route.

His recovery is progressing well, and Mthembu has already begun a phased training programme to prepare for the 2025 Comrades. He’s gradually increasing his running distance, starting with shorter races to build up his stamina and fitness.

“I started by running 10kms, then I'll follow with 20kms and more to be fit and qualify for the Comrades Marathon. I’m happy that in the Hollywood Bets race, I made one hour and 15 minutes, which wasn't bad at all. Before the operation, I was doing 10km within an hour,” he explained.

This dedication to his training regime demonstrates his commitment to achieving his ambitious goal.

Mthembu’s recent participation in the Hollywood Bets 10km race at Durban’s Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, 29 September, served as a significant milestone in his recovery. The race provided a valuable opportunity to test his fitness levels and gauge his progress. His performance, clocking in at one hour and fifteen minutes, is a testament to his resilience and determination.

Beyond his running aspirations, Mthembu remains active in his other passions. A member of the Clermont Choir, he recently embarked on an international tour with the choir, performing in Dubai and New York in September. This achievement underscores his remarkable recovery and ability to balance his demanding career with his personal pursuits.

“I’m grateful that my operation is healing well, because I managed to travel overseas to perform with the choir,” he shared.

This successful trip demonstrates his commitment to his musical talents alongside his athletic ambitions. The combination of his acting career, his dedication to music, and his rigorous training schedule paints a picture of a man who is determined to achieve his goals.
