Johannesburg – Skeem Saam actor Tiisetso Thoka, who plays DJ Thomas on the popular SABC 1 soapie, is defending his character's controversial affair with the married Mapitsi Maputla, despite the backlash from some viewers. Thoka argues that the storyline reflects the realities of relationships and the challenges that many families face.

The 35-year-old actor told Daily Sun that he understands why some viewers are taking the storyline personally. "People think I’m a homewrecker coming in to wreck the Maputla family. I understand the depth of it," he said. "It's quite interesting and I love playing the character because a lot of people out there need to realise that this is what happens in families."

Thoka believes that the storyline highlights the importance of communication and attention in relationships. "You can’t always want everything to be perfect. We encounter challenges, and there’s a lot of problems that go on in relationships," he explained. He added that people often seek happiness elsewhere if they feel neglected or unfulfilled in their current relationships.

"If you don’t give your partner that focus or time, they'll eventually seek it elsewhere. That’s why Mapitsi went to Thomas because she wants affection and she isn’t getting it from her husband," Thoka stated, suggesting that Mapitsi's affair is a consequence of her husband's neglect.

The actor emphasised that Skeem Saam aims to portray real-life issues, even if they are uncomfortable for some viewers. "Even though people are taking it personal, it’s reality. Skeem Saam is an educational show, and we're showcasing what is happening in families. Don't expect to see what you want to see," he said.

Thoka also revealed that he has personal experience with similar situations. "It was back when I was in tertiary. I’ve been through that and I’m okay now," he shared, suggesting that his own experiences inform his portrayal of DJ Thomas.

Speaking about his journey on Skeem Saam, Thoka expressed his satisfaction with the character's evolution. "DJ Thomas has been there from day one. Back then he had dreadlocks and was a bit darker. I love the fact that the character has evolved and can finally be on screen full time," he said.

The controversial storyline has sparked debate among Skeem Saam viewers, with some criticising the show for promoting infidelity, while others appreciate the show's willingness to tackle complex and challenging issues.
