President Ramaphosa finally announces his National Executive: Here is the full list of Cabinet of Ministers

President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed his newly formed Cabinet on Sunday night. The highly anticipated government of national unity (GNU) marks a historic moment for South Africa, as it brings together members from various political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), in a collaborative effort to steer the nation forward.

"We have had to consider how to form the new government in a manner that advances the national interest, that gives due consideration to the outcome of the election and that makes use of the respective capabilities within each of the parties," Ramaphosa said, acknowledging the unprecedented nature of the GNU.

The DA, led by John Steenhuisen, emerged as a key player in the new government, securing six ministerial positions, including the crucial portfolio of Agriculture, which Steenhuisen will now head.

"Despite a last minute push by Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to be part of the Government of National Unity – with a condition that it must not include the DA and Freedom Front Plus – Ramaphosa struck a deal with DA leader John Steenhuisen that will see the DA lead six ministries," a source close to the negotiations revealed.

The DA also secured six deputy ministerial positions, showcasing their significant influence in the new government.

The EFF's attempt to derail the deal and form a coalition with the ANC, excluding the DA and FF Plus, ultimately proved unsuccessful. The DA's hard-nosed negotiation tactics, coupled with the ANC's need for a stable government, led to the DA's acceptance into the GNU.

Speaking at the televised address, President Ramaphosa emphasized the significance of this moment in South Africa's democratic history. He stated, "The establishment of the Government of National Unity in its current form is unprecedented. We have had to consider not only the immediate needs of the country but also the outcome of the election and the capabilities within each of the participating parties."

The formation of this GNU comes after the ANC secured just over 40% of the national vote in May's general elections, prompting them to join forces with the DA and various other parties. The unity agreement includes the Patriotic Alliance (PA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), GOOD, Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+), United Democratic Movement (UDM), Rise Mzansi, Al Jama-ah, and United African Transformation (UAT). Each party brings its unique strengths and perspectives to the table, fostering a sense of shared responsibility in shaping the nation's future.

While the majority of cabinet positions are filled by ANC members, the DA has secured significant portfolios, including Agriculture, Home Affairs, Basic Education, Public Works and Infrastructure, Communications and Digital Technologies, as well as Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment. The DA will also hold deputy ministries in Finance, Energy and Electricity, Small Business Development, Water and Sanitation, Higher Education, and the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition. This distribution of responsibilities ensures that a wide range of voices and expertise are represented within the government.

Vincent Magwenya, the Presidency spokesperson, confirmed that the newly appointed cabinet members will be sworn in on Tuesday at the prestigious Union Buildings in Pretoria. This symbolic occasion will mark the official commencement of the government of national unity, signaling a new era of collaboration and collective decision-making in South Africa's political landscape.
