Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal: A self-proclaimed prophet who preyed on young girls has been sentenced to five life terms plus an additional 30 years in prison. Mthokozisi Cyril Mdlalose, 37, was found guilty of multiple counts of rape by the Nquthu Regional Court on Wednesday.
The crimes occurred between October 2020 and August 2022, and involved three victims, all under the age of 18. Mdlalose used his position as a spiritual leader to manipulate and abuse his victims.
According to the police, Mdlalose would lure his victims to his home under the guise of providing spiritual guidance or healing. Once there, he would sexually assault them, often threatening them with dire consequences if they reported the crimes.
In one instance, Mdlalose told an 18-year-old girl that she was cursed and needed to be cleansed. He then took her to his home and raped her. The girl's mother believed the prophet and allowed her daughter to go with him.
In another case, Mdlalose told a 15-year-old girl that he could help her with her problems. He then took her to his home and raped her multiple times.
The third victim was also an 18-year-old girl who was brought to Mdlalose by her mother for a traditional healing ceremony. During the ceremony, Mdlalose drugged the girl and raped her.
The investigating officer in the case, a detective from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, was praised for his tireless efforts in bringing Mdlalose to justice. The court also commended the detective for his meticulous investigation, which helped to secure a conviction.
"The sentence sends a clear message that sexual violence will not be tolerated," said KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
"We are committed to protecting the vulnerable and ensuring that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions."
Mdlalose has been declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
