The incident which has sparked outrage and concern in the community occurred as the victim was returning from a doctor's appointment. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the woman was walking past the spaza shop when the suspect allegedly grabbed her and forced her inside, where he committed the heinous act.

"The victim reported the incident to the police in Kwaggafontein, and members immediately investigated, leading to the prompt arrest of the suspect at his shop later the same day," said Mdhluli.

"The suspect appeared in the Mkobola Magistrates Court on Thursday, 19 September, and the case was adjourned to Friday, 20 September, for legal representation. The suspect remains in custody."

Adding to the gravity of the situation, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect seemingly loves tlof tlof too much as he has previous pending rape cases and was allegedly out on bail at the time of the incident.

Major-General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has condemned the act of gender-based violence, describing it as "disturbing" and a crime against a "defenceless victim."

However, Mkhwanazi praised the swift response and dedication of SAPS members in arresting the suspect. He stressed that the SAPS would continue to take strong action against any perpetrator of gender-based violence.

"We will not tolerate such acts of violence against women and children," said Mkhwanazi.

"We urge members of the public to allow legal process to proceed without resorting to vigilante justice, which could compromise the integrity of the investigation."

The incident has highlighted the ongoing challenge of gender-based violence in South Africa. Despite numerous campaigns and initiatives aimed at combating this scourge, cases of rape and sexual assault continue to plague communities across the country.
