Businessman confesses and reveals why he killed popular pastry chef Thembekile Letlape

Sibusiso Zitha, the man accused of murdering renowned pastry chef Thembekile Letlape, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The court appearance followed Zitha's recent bail application, where he pleaded for release to settle his business affairs and ensure the well-being of his two children. However, the focus of Monday's proceedings centred on Zitha's confession and the circumstances surrounding Letlape's death.

Zitha's confession, detailed in his bail affidavit, forms a critical part of the state's case. He explicitly admitted guilt, stating his understanding of the potential consequences and his intention to plead guilty to the charges. He also sought to assure the court that he posed no threat to public safety.

"There is no evidence that I will not stand my trial; I am guilty of the crime, and I am aware of the sentence that this court can impose on me,” Zitha stated in his affidavit.

His affidavit offered a glimpse into the events leading up to the tragic incident. He explained that his actions stemmed from a combination of factors, including intoxication and significant stress.

"I did not wait for the SAPS [SA Police Service] to hunt me and find me for the crime that I committed; I took myself to them and confirmed that I committed the offence," he wrote.

"I confirm that when I committed the crime, I was intoxicated along with the deceased, and I was under heavy stress and under the influence of cocaine, alcohol, and lack of sleep for over 36 hours. This is, however, not an excuse for my actions.”

The court also heard testimony from another state witness, whose identity remains protected due to a court order. This testimony further strengthened the prosecution's case against Zitha. The inclusion of this additional witness underscores the seriousness of the evidence against the accused.

Zitha's arrest in June followed the discovery of Letlape's body at Zitha's Fourways home on May 30th. The case has drawn significant public attention, given Letlape's prominence in the culinary world. The details emerging from Zitha's confession are likely to shape the course of the proceedings and the eventual sentencing.

In his bail application, Zitha highlighted his role as a father and businessman, expressing concern about the impact of his incarceration on both his family and his business. However, the court will weigh these considerations against the gravity of the crime and the evidence presented against him.

The matter has been postponed to October 31st for judgment on the bail application. The court will consider all aspects of the case, including Zitha's confession, the state's evidence, and the accused's personal circumstances, before reaching a decision on whether to grant bail.
