A teacher at Symphony High School in Belhar, Cape Town, Kelly Manus, has gone viral on TikTok after posting videos detailing allegations of sexual harassment by a colleague and subsequent job loss. The videos, which have amassed over 900,000 views, have prompted an investigation by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and sparked calls for action from community organisations.

In a two-part video, a visibly distressed Manus alleges that a male teacher, identified as the husband of the school principal, slapped her on the bottom. She claims he dismissed the incident as unintentional, stating he treated her “like a daughter.” Manus further alleges that she reported the matter to both the principal and the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC).

“The sexual harassment case was finalised in November 2024,” Manus states in the video. “He was addressed and instructed to keep his distance and to refrain from behaviour like this. No one addressed his wife for handling the case the way she did. The employment case is being investigated.”

Beyond the alleged sexual harassment, Manus claims she was unfairly denied a permanent teaching position. She explains: “Teachers who were employed at the school after me, became permanent before I could. I re-applied again for conversion but it was declined and suddenly the vacant post I was in since 2022, is no longer vacant. Who is in my post?” This assertion adds another layer of complexity to her situation, raising concerns about potential workplace discrimination.

The WCED has acknowledged the allegations and is conducting an investigation. WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, stated: “The WCED is aware of the video that is circulating and the allegations raised. This was brought to our attention [yesterday] morning. We are making enquiries into the matter.” This official response indicates a commitment to addressing the serious claims made by Manus.

Manus clarified her intentions behind the viral videos in an interview with the Cape Argus. She stated: “I made a case with the ELRC on the last day of school last year. I have to await an outcome for an investigation. The reason for the video was with the intent of getting my job back and for people in positions like the principal – don’t abuse their power. I am not saying that because of the sexual harassment case I was let go, it’s a mere suspicion as I was supposed to be permanent under the previous principal.” She also noted that she has yet to receive contact from the ELRC, WCED, or her union.

The allegations have prompted a strong response from various stakeholders. Alvin Kaliza of the Belhar Lookout and Assist confirmed plans for a protest march on Friday, January 17th, in support of Manus, emphasising a commitment to peaceful demonstration. Kenneth Williams of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) acknowledged awareness of the videos but cautioned against making definitive statements before all the facts are gathered.

Siya Monakali from Ilitha Labantu, an anti-gender-based violence (GBV) activist group, expressed concern over the allegations. Bernice Loxton from the ELRC indicated they would investigate whether Manus formally registered a case. Manus has provided the Cape Argus with proof of a registered case number.

Despite numerous attempts, the principal and her husband remain unavailable for comment. The situation at Symphony High School remains tense, with the viral TikTok videos highlighting serious allegations of sexual harassment, potential workplace discrimination, and a broader concern about the handling of such matters within the education system.
