Rea Vaya bus services in Soweto have been suspended indefinitely following the fatal shootings of two bus drivers in separate incidents on Monday night. The attacks, which occurred in Protea Glen and Mapetla, have left the City of Johannesburg reeling and prompted urgent discussions about improving security for public transport operators.

In the first incident, a bus driver was shot and killed while stopped at a traffic light on Wild Chestnut Street in Protea Glen. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the details, stating, “It is reported that the driver had stopped at a robot along Wild Chestnut Street when he was shot and killed by unknown suspects. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and the police are following up on all the leads as the investigation continues.”

The second incident took place on Tshithuthune Street, where another driver was fatally shot. According to Nevhuhulwi, an eyewitness reported being the last passenger on the bus when the attack occurred. “The eyewitness reported that he heard gunshots and took cover. After it got quiet, he realised that the driver was shot. He tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. The driver was declared dead on the scene, and the passenger sustained no injuries,” she said.

City Reacts with Shock and Condolences

The City of Johannesburg expressed deep shock and condemnation over the killings. Executive Mayor Dada Morero and his mayoral committee extended their condolences to the families of the victims, describing the murders as “senseless.”

City spokesperson Virgil James said, “Dada Morero, together with his mayoral committee and city manager, have expressed their shock and dismay at the senseless killing of two Rea Vaya bus drivers and expressed their deepest condolences to their family and friends.”

In response to the incidents, Rea Vaya announced the immediate suspension of its bus services in Soweto. The company issued a statement on social media, advising commuters to seek alternative transport. “Buses are temporarily suspended until further notice. Regular updates on the situation will be given,” the statement read.

Calls for Improved Security

The City of Johannesburg is now working with law enforcement, the taxi industry, and other stakeholders to address security concerns and prevent further attacks. The suspension of Rea Vaya services has left many commuters stranded, highlighting the need for swift action to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers.

Police investigations into both shootings are ongoing, but the motive behind the attacks remains unclear. Colonel Nevhuhulwi emphasised that authorities are following all leads to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Community Impact

The killings have sparked outrage and fear among Soweto residents, many of whom rely on Rea Vaya buses for daily transportation. The suspension of services has added to the challenges faced by commuters, who now must navigate alternative routes and modes of transport.
