Durban – Glenwood High School is in mourning following the tragic death of a 15-year-old Grade 10 pupil who collapsed and died on Tuesday afternoon while preparing for a hockey match. The school community, along with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, is reeling from the sudden loss.

The incident occurred during a warm-up session. According to KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC (Member of the Executive Council) Sipho Hlomuka, the pupil requested to be substituted, complaining of needing some air. He stepped aside, but then collapsed. Paramedics were immediately called to the scene, but tragically, they were unable to resuscitate him.

"It is with deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and school community of the Grade 10 pupil from Glenwood High School who tragically passed away while preparing for a hockey match," said Hlomuka.

The boy's family, teachers, head of department Nkosinathi Ngcobo, and department officials were present at the scene following the tragedy. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has pledged its support to the school and the bereaved family during this difficult time.

"As the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, we recognise the immense grief felt by all who knew him. We will continue to work closely with Glenwood High School to ensure that the necessary psychological and emotional support is provided to learners, educators, and the bereaved family," the MEC added.

In a statement released to the boy's parents and the wider Glenwood community, the principal and school governing body expressed their profound sadness and offered their condolences. "As a community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and wish them immense strength during this profoundly difficult time," the statement read.

Out of respect for the boy's family, the school has declined to disclose any further details surrounding the circumstances of his death. The principal addressed the school on Wednesday after meeting with staff to discuss the tragedy and how to support the pupils and educators affected by the loss.

ALS paramedics confirmed that their paramedics attended the scene to provide assistance.

Messages of support and condolences have been pouring in from schools and organisations across the region. Maritzburg College posted on Facebook: "We send deepest sympathy to the learner's family and to the whole Glenwood family. You are all in our thoughts."

Ashton International College Ballito also shared their condolences on Facebook, saying: "Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in peace."

The Glenwood High School community is now focused on providing support to those affected by this devastating loss and remembering the young life that was tragically cut short.
