Cape Town – A Metro Police officer from Kuilsriver has been arrested in Delft, a known gang hotspot, for possession of illegal ammunition. The arrest took place on Saturday, 29 March, at a house linked to a member of the notorious Horrible Gang.

The incident raises serious questions about potential corruption and the infiltration of law enforcement by criminal elements. It also adds to a growing list of officers found on the wrong side of the law, further eroding public trust in the police force.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed the arrest, stating that members of the Delft SAPS Crime Prevention unit acted on a tip-off.

"Members attached to the Delft SAPS Crime Prevention unit acted on information and searched the suspects and their vehicle in Tamarisk, Delft on Saturday, 29 March 2025. The area is a renowned gang hotspot," said Pojie.

"The members discovered and seized 45 .38 Special rounds of ammunition which were found on them and subsequently arrested both suspects, aged 31 and 27, for the illegal possession of ammunition," he added.

The officer, identified as a trainee Metro Cop, was arrested alongside another suspect. Both appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Monday, 31 March.

When contacted for comment, Ruth Solomons, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Department, confirmed that the City was aware of the arrest.

She says: “We are aware of the arrest and will fully co-operate with the SAPS investigation. An internal investigation is also underway in conjunction with the criminal matter and the City will ensure appropriate action is taken. For any further information, please approach SAPS."

The arrest has prompted strong reactions from community leaders. Francois de Bruin, the Public Relations Officer for the Delft Community Police Forum, described the incident as a "very disturbing occurrence".

He adds: "We as CPF, unequivocally state we have Metro and Law enforcement officers who every day put their lives on the line for this community and surrounding areas. Yes, it raises red flags when our Law Enforcement officers get arrested but, if evidence points to those implicated. Yes, let the Law take its full course. If found guilty, eradicate them from these trusted post positions."

This incident is not isolated. Earlier this month, another officer was arrested for rape at the Gordon's Bay police station. Furthermore, three other officers were arrested on 3 March for robbery charges after they allegedly robbed a Somali national's spaza shop last year. These three were arrested at Nyanga police station after months of investigation by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit.
