Former Bafana Bafana defender Thabo Nthethe has enjoyed a long and successful career in South African football, but one game stands out as the toughest of his professional life: a 5-0 drubbing by Brazil in 2014.
This international friendly, played at the FNB Stadium, marked Nthethe's last call-up to the national team, and the experience left a lasting impression. He recalls the match vividly, particularly his encounter with the Brazilian superstar, Neymar.
"My worst moment is the Brazil game," Nthethe reflects. "It was my last call-up for national duties. I struggled to contain Neymar; the way he moved, the level was not the same."
He describes Neymar's skill and speed as exceptional: "His dribbling is unique. When you watch him on TV, you might think he's slow. When you face him, it's amazing; he is very fast. I'm a professional player but playing against another professional player on a different level, you could see the difference. His dribbling, his thinking, and his take-off."
Despite the humbling experience, Nthethe acknowledges Neymar's talent: "Whatever Neymar achieved, he deserved it."
In stark contrast to this challenging encounter, Nthethe cites winning the Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 as his career highlight.
"I was so happy that I had done so well to achieve that. I never thought I'd achieve that. It was only a league, which I wanted more. God was guiding me. I don't regret anything in my career. He almost made me retire from football early and prematurely," he said.
Nthethe's ambition extended beyond domestic success. He harboured a dream of playing for Chelsea in the English Premier League, a testament to his dedication and high aspirations. Now a development coach for Casric Stars in the National First Division, he imparts his wisdom to aspiring footballers.
He emphasises the importance of focus and dedication: "To be a professional footballer, one must be focused and must do everything with heart. Whatever you dream of, work on it and don't be confused by adding other things."
He and his team are currently striving for promotion to the PSL. Beyond coaching, Nthethe serves as an ambassador for MTN 8, further showcasing his continued involvement in the football world.
His sixteen-season career, spanning from 2002 to his retirement in 2019, saw him represent several prominent South African clubs including Bloemfontein Celtic, TS Galaxy, Chippa United, and Baroka FC.
Even in retirement, he maintains a rigorous fitness regime.
"I continue to exercise, I run a lot to keep myself fit. I eat well. My favourite food is pasta with mushroom sauce and chicken chops," he reveals, adding that he also enjoys a hearty breakfast of bread, avocado, and eggs.
He continues to play for a masters team, demonstrating his enduring passion for the game. His journey, from facing the world's best to achieving continental glory, provides a compelling narrative for aspiring footballers and a lasting legacy in South African football.
