Ex-Bafana Bafana and Sundowns footballer is now earning a living as a mine worker: I messed up in my life

Lovers Mohlala, a name synonymous with the golden era of South African football, has traded the roar of the crowd for the rumble of mining machinery.

The former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns left-back, known for his hard tackles and scintillating runs on the touchline, is now a proud mineworker in North West.

The 48-year-old, who once graced the fields of Wits University, Sundowns, Jomo Cosmos, Silver Stars, AmaZulu, Moroka Swallows, AmaGlug-Glug (SA Under-23) and Bafana, has admitted to making wrong decisions in his life.

His glittering football career has left him with nothing to show for it, and he now finds himself working in an industry he never imagined he would be part of.

“I never thought one day I will be working at the mine,” Mohlala said on his social media platform, where he posted a picture of himself next to an open mine shaft.

Mohlala, who was born in Alexandra, is now a stockpile manager at the mine. He says a friend hooked him up with the mine boss, who is also a friend, but he is unable to disclose the name of the mine or any other details.

“I cannot sit at home and do nothing. Now I am working for my children and family. A man must be busy and not be idling. I am also selling livestock in Brits and meat in Brakpan. My family (wife and kids) are in the East Rand while I am mostly based in North-West province,” Mohlala told Sunday World on Thursday.

Despite a few negative comments, Mohlala has received an outpouring of support from his followers. Many have encouraged him to work hard for his family, praising his honesty and resilience.

“I am of you Lovers, in this industry (mining) there are plenty of opportunities. And you will be able to provide for your family. Whatever people say, it’s not important,” wrote Tshepo van Schalkwyk.

“As long as your family is surviving through you, then let it be. Don’t worry about us, we will judge you based on your previous experience. And at the end, we can do nothing for you to survive,” commented Mawiller William Sibeko.

“Guys, there’s no need to mock someone for his past mistakes. Everyone got mistakes, but it’s good to take any job that will help you provide for your family. Rather than to commit crime. Money is the same my man and I’m proud of your hustle,” said Vuyile Tshazibana.

“There are many people who would do anything for that job. You are a very inspiring person who’s living an honest life,” added Pablo.
