Zolisa Xaluva's Contract Not Renewed on Telenovela "Smoke & Mirrors"
Despite weeks of negotiations and attempts to reach a resolution, e-TV has decided not to renew Zolisa Xaluva's contract for the telenovela "Smoke & Mirrors."
Contrary to initial reports suggesting that Zolisa had been dismissed due to a financial dispute, he clarified the situation stating that he had not been fired and that he was nearing the end of his contractual negotiations for season two. Zolisa had been waiting to learn whether he would continue for the second season. However, after extensive discussions, a decision was made not to renew his contract. "Some might interpret it as being fired, but it's a case of not renewing his contract. The company wanted him to work exclusively for them and not on other productions, and he questioned that clause in the contract," revealed an e-TV insider. "He knows his worth, which some may perceive as arrogance, but he is a gentleman who is not desperate. The company didn't agree to some of his terms, and they mutually decided to part ways."
Replacement Cast for the Role
Seasoned actor Hlomla Dandala will be taking over the role of ruthless businessman Caesar, previously portrayed by Zolisa. According to an insider, Hlomla will begin shooting for season two. "He won't be coming in as a different character who kills off Caesar. He will be playing Caesar Ngonyama and taking over from Zolisa. It's a tricky situation, right?" the insider shared. "He will be playing the role of Caesar, and inevitably, people will compare the performances. We need to prepare ourselves for that."
Hlomla had left his role as police commissioner Zweli Dikana on "The River" as he felt the character was taking a different direction that no longer fulfilled his passion for acting. In an interview, he explained, "If you stay in any character for a long time, it becomes difficult to break away or be perceived differently. If you establish yourself as a leading man and then play a weaker character, if you don't transition quickly, it becomes harder and harder." He believed it was hindering his growth as an actor. "I was content with the character for a long time, but eventually, we started to drift apart creatively, and I realized I needed to manage my career. Part of that is not getting locked into a situation that doesn't align with my long-term goals. It can damage your future as an actor."
