Mthobeli "K-CI" August, a former beloved presenter on Umhlobo Wenene and well-known radio and TV personality, has passed away. K-Ci, who hosted the afternoon drive show on the popular SABC radio station, was discovered unconscious at his home in Johannesburg on Friday, December 29. His rise to fame began in the early 2000s, and he quickly transitioned to television, co-presenting the popular maskandi show "Ezodumo" alongside Puleng Thulo, who was a presenter on Lesedi FM at the time. K-Ci earned his nickname from the US R&B star K-Ci of K-Ci & Jojo fame.
TRAGIC DISCOVERY OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS
According to a close source, K-Ci, who resided in Johannesburg, was found unconscious and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The source revealed that it is suspected he slipped and fell, as there are no signs of foul play. Unfortunately, since he lived alone, nobody was able to assist him in time.
FAMILY CONFIRMS HIS PASSING
On Friday, the August family issued a statement confirming his passing and requested privacy during this time of mourning. The statement expressed deep sadness over the discovery of Mthobeli "K-CI" August's unconsciousness in his Johannesburg home on December 29, 2023. They acknowledged his accomplishments as a decorated radio broadcaster who captivated audiences across South Africa with his unique presenting style. Funeral details will be shared at a later stage.
FALLING OUT WITH SABC
In 2007, K-CI experienced a fallout with Umhlobo Wenene, resulting in his suspension and subsequent termination from the station. However, due to the pressure from listeners who wanted him back, Umhlobo Wenene eventually reinstated him. After losing his job once again, K-Ci continued to work as a private MC at various functions. In November of the previous year, he faced accusations of taking a client's money without fulfilling his contractual obligations for a wedding booking. In an interview with Drum magazine, K-Ci expressed his contentment with life and stated that he would be a happy man even if he were to die at that moment.
Mthobeli "K-CI" August's passing marks the end of a remarkable career in broadcasting, leaving behind fond memories for his fans and colleagues alike.
