"Funeral of Renowned Playwright and Musician Mbongeni Ngema to Proceed Despite Family Disagreement"
Following a statement released by a faction of the family expressing dissatisfaction with the funeral arrangements of acclaimed playwright and musician Mbongeni Ngema, his younger brother, Nhlanhla Ngema, has confirmed that the 68-year-old's funeral will proceed as planned.
Ngema tragically lost his life in a head-on collision in the Eastern Cape last week and is set to be laid to rest at Heroes Acre in the Redhill Cemetery in Durban.
While the family members who released the initial statement claimed that Ngema's desired final resting place was eNhlwathi in northern KwaZulu-Natal, where the Ngema homestead is reportedly located, Nhlanhla stated that everything is proceeding according to the predetermined plans.
"As far as I'm concerned, there is no disagreement with anyone," Nhlanhla assured News24. "We are about to participate in the funeral proceedings. Everyone has agreed and is on common terms."
The family also mentioned that certain cultural practices, typically performed by elders to bring the spirit of the deceased back home, had not yet been completed.
Acknowledging that family rifts are not uncommon in such situations, Nhlanhla emphasized that they had engaged in discussions to reach a mutual understanding.
In the days leading up to the funeral, Ngema's alleged customary wife, Yolanda Moncho, had threatened legal action to prevent the government from organizing the funeral unless she was recognized as his wife in the funeral program. Nhlanhla expressed uncertainty about Moncho's attendance, stating that his focus is on ensuring a peaceful and well-organized farewell for his brother.
Earlier this week, Ngema's life was celebrated at The Playhouse Theatre, with family, friends, associates, and dignitaries in attendance. During the memorial service, Ngema's recognized wife, Nompumelelo Gumede, conveyed her gratitude to him for his love, protection, and support throughout their relationship. Gumede highlighted Ngema's work ethic, discipline, and commitment to nurturing talent, expressing her enduring respect and appreciation for their shared dreams.
Gumede concluded by stating that Ngema had left her with cherished memories, and she would forever hold him in her heart, remembering their shared aspirations.
