Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been suspended by Kaizer Chiefs and relieved of the captaincy amid allegations of arriving at training under the influence of alcohol.
The club announced it conducted an internal investigation and disciplinary procedure in response to "certain incidents" involving Khune. Test results reportedly confirmed he was intoxicated, leading to him being sent home from a session.
In a statement, Chiefs said Khune will be "temporarily separated from the team" and expected to participate in "programmes designed to support his personal growth and development."
A statement released today, said: "At the conclusion of the club's rigorous disciplinary processes last week, the committee has taken stern action and decided that Itumeleng Khune should be temporarily separated from the team until certain conditions have been fulfilled. As a club that upholds the highest levels of professionalism in which discipline forms a key component, Kaizer Chiefs initiated an internal investigation after certain incidents involving Khune came to our attention," The club said the investigation was important in ensuring the proper functioning and unity within Amakhosi. "During his absence, Khune will be expected to attend and actively participate in certain programmes designed to support his personal growth and development with support from the club," the statement read. The club added that the programmes are specifically aimed at helping Khune address challenges and issues he is facing.
The programs aim to help Khune address any challenges or issues, according to the club. Once complete and expectations are met, he will be welcomed back.
Chiefs stressed the importance of discipline, integrity and unity. As a professional club upholding high standards, they initiated a "rigorous" probe to ensure proper team functioning.
While stripping Khune of the captaincy armband for now, Chiefs said they are committed to providing necessary support during this period through "corrective measures to achieve personal growth."
